Hiroyuki Utsumi

About Me:
I was born in Tokyo, Japan, and now live in Meguro. Meguro is famous for cherry blossoms along the Meguro river. In the spring they are at their best, and very beautiful. So there are many visitors in the season. In 2018 more than 3 million people visited there.
My hobby is watching movies. My favorite movies are “Field of Dreams”, “Forrest Gump”, “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” and “The Lord of the Rings”. It is especially impressive for me how beautiful the scenery in “The Lord of the Rings” is. I would like to go where it’s filmed in New Zealand.
I have majored in law at the university. In the last year I studied the constitution, the civil law and the criminal law. But I’m also interested in cultural anthropology and linguistics. Therefore I like to read the writings of Sir James Frazer or Avram Noam Chomsky.

  1. I used to live along the Meguro River and have been to see the cherry blossoms. Now is the best season, isn't it? I remembered learning yesterday from Mrs. Sonya that when you introduce yourself to Maori, they ask you which river you are from.

  4. I heard that Meguro river is very famous for cherry blossoms. I really envy you because you can enjoy the beautiful scenery in spring vacation!
You mentioned that you are quite interested in movies. I am also into movies, or dramas. I love criminal dramas(like FBI investigation) but your recommendation seems fascinating. I'd like to watch it in the future!
It seems that you are such a curious person that you would like to learn a variety of fields. I think our university provides a lot of specialized classes with students who do not belong to the faculty, so I hope you enjoy your study!

    1. Thank you for your comment. Yes, it is really beautiful. But these years it has been so crowded along the river in the season that there has been no room for foot trafic. So unfortunately I could hardly have gone seeing it recently.

  5. "If you build it, they will come." May these words be true for each of us. May we each build a space which turns out to be a place for others, a place where they can be nurtured, inspired and enabled.
By the way, I too have enjoyed reading the work of various linguists and applied linguists over the years. I particularly enjoy Levinson's writings on "politeness."

    1. Thank you for your comment. I agree with you. I also hope the place will come where spirits themselves can be admired. I think that is maybe the "dream'' in the title.
Thank you again for your recommendation. I would like to read it.

  6. Forrest Gump is one of my favorite movies. "Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get." His life gives us strength and makes us cheer ourselves up.

    1. Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately I actually don’t know what restaurant it is. The areas especially near the station have quickly get developed, so I don’t know a lot about them, but there are also many good restaurants along the river, please try them if you like.

  8. You seem to like foreign culture. It is always interesting and stimulating to me too. How do you watch the movies and read the books? Do you catch up with the stories without captions and read them fluently without deepl? I don't. So I can't say I enjoy the cultures. Culture should be studied but also be enjoyed I think.
