Should individual countries have the right to interfere with the affairs of another country?-Shogo Moro, Erina Kon

Image
The principle of non-intervention in the domestic affairs of another nation is enacted by the Charter of the United Nations, and globally accepted. However, should individual countries truly have no right to interfere with the affairs of another country?      It is widely believed that every country should have the right to decide their policies independently. Interference often leads to one-sided demands and unreasonable dominance, which contradict the benefit of a country which receives them. The history of colonization obviously reveals the existence of conflicts and exploitation as a result of outside intervention. Additionally, Russian invasion of Ukraine indicates that interference in the affairs of another country results in a terrible situation even today. On the other hand, although interference in domestic affairs induces many problems like this, the principle of non-intervention sometimes causes even worse influences.      Sup...

Should women be promoted to top jobs in business and politics before men?

Image
Gender inequality is a major problem in business and politics. Eespecially, only 8% of management posts is occupied by women in Japan in 2021. It has been required for us to achieve gender equality by the government and companies. Men-dominated society and company are not acceptable according to our values and also noncompetitive because the lack of diversity should inhibit them from giving valuable and useful services. Is enough being done to resolve the problem, however?      Not a few people think that men are more competent even now. It is thought that Women should do household chores and look after their children instead of working and managing and that they wouldn't work as much and productively as men. Additionally, it has been thought that women quit their job after their marriage and childbirth while men continue to work and it's better for companies to get people who work longer in companies for the benefit of the companies. Besides, we may n...

Something I Have Learned Along The Way- kenta Nishida

Waking up early in the morning is a good way to start a new day. This is the lesson I have learned along the way. When I was a junior high school student, I often stayed up late at night, and I was sleeping during the class. However, after becoming a university student, I started to become an early bird in order to lead a healthier life. It took a long time to change my routine, but ,in the end, I realized how wonderful it is to wake up early. I can do a lot of things! Doing yoga, running, reading, watching movies, cooking etc. In addition, I can concentrate on everything in the morning, because no sound interrupts me. It is quite silent! I love spending my own time early in the morning, and I’d like to keep my routine as much as possible after joining a company next month.

Do students have to pay their own college fees? (Kana Shimamoto and Taisei Hamaguchi)

Image
Have you ever thought about student money? In Japan, the population is declining year by year, resulting in an aging society with fewer children. Fewer people paying taxes and higher social security costs put pressure on the national budget, necessitating cost cutting. So, is it no longer necessary for the government to subsidize college tuition? Should students pay for college? Firstly, In Japan, the age of adulthood will be lowered from 20 to 18 this year. Students become adults when they enter college and must take responsibility for their own. In addition, students will be able to take out loans from the age of 18 accordingly. Therefore, the environment is conducive for students to pay their own college tuition.  Second, Japanese universities are not that expensive compared to other countries. According to data reported to the U.S. News in an annual survey, the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2021-2022 school year is $43,775 at private colleges, $28,238 for out-of-stat...

Agree or disagree? To interfere with the affairs of another country - Minori Sato, Kanon Sunayama

Image
These days, Western countries have started economical sanctions on Russia and Belarus because of the Ukraine-Russia War. Is this a good way to solve these issues? First of all, do Individual countries have the right to interfere with the affairs of another country? Some people agree with this, others say no.  First, If countries get involved in the affairs of other countries, especially in the time of war, the affairs will prolong and there is a risk of making the situation even worse. As a result, civilians might suffer for a long time. Additionally, even if the affairs of one country get complicated, for example, the case of North Korea, we don’t know how to be engaged. Sometimes independent decisions may increase the risks and make the situations more dangerous. However, the affairs of another country strongly affect ours. Doing nothing is not the right thing to do for the sake of our country and our peaceful life.  In a globalized world, we are related to each other. For e...

Everybody in the world should have access to a library (Nanami Higashi, Jiayue CHEN)

Image
We cannot say people around the world have access to a library nowadays. Is it necessary for everyone in the world to get access to it?  Some developing countries may not need a library, because they’d like to spend money on something more essential for their lives, such as food, housing, and infrastructure. So, access to a library can be a low priority in underdeveloped countries. Additionally, there are people who cannot read in the world. According to research, the global adult illiteracy rate (aged 15 years and older) was 14 percent in 2019, which has remained almost unchanged since 2015. If we create a library and get access to books, it’ll be useless if we don’t have literacy. As a result, constructing a library can cause the waste of resources. However, we can also find some merits for countries and people I mentioned above, and merits for us as well.    Regardless of countries, age, or abilities, people have rights to have access to knowledge as they like. ...

Women should be promoted to top jobs in business and politics before men-Hiroaki. Hiroyuki, Yue

Image
The number of women who have top jobs is still low even though many women got  jobs. It is said that women should be promoted to top jobs.  In fact in the C-suite in the US, women comprised 21 percent in January 2020 . In the EU’s largest publicly listed companies in 2020, 19.3 percent of executives and 7.9 percent of CEOs were women, according to Catalyst, a non-profit group. So Do society have to promote women to top jobs?  Who is responsible for it? There are some disagreements. Firstly, If a man and a woman have the same ability and have put the same effort into the work, it is unequal for the man to get promoted after the woman. And it will cause reverse discrimination. Additionally,  It will generate the stigma that women could be thought they have top jobs just because of gender. What’s more, for the company, If a woman is promoted just because of she is a woman, it will lower the motivation of men in organizations. However, given that there are...

Something I Have Learned Along the Way -- David Woodfield

A life lesson I have learned is not to hold grudges, or in other words to forgive others who have hurt or wronged me. Holding on to resentment not only prevents you from improving your relationships with others, but it also hurts you inside. It makes you feel dissatisfied and unhappy. I have been inspired by the words of Jesus to have this attitude. In the Bible, we read that Peter, one of Jesus's disciples, came to him and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”  Jesus's answer was unforgettable. He answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven."

JUST TRY. Don’t be afraid. Everyone is just a beginner at first. This is what I have learned along the way. In the past, sometimes I felt that I’m not the suitable person to be here or to take this class because everyone around me is better than me.  Especially after I entered university, many people around me are good at something: people who can do programming and are good at dealing with machines, people who speak very logical and clean English, people who have plenty of knowledge in biology and are good at experiments, and so on. But I changed my mind and think that I have my own strengths, and everyone is different. Also, everyone makes mistakes at first. They must have worked hard and made progress, so why not me? I can do it too. There is one movie quote from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. “Think of it this way: Every great wizard in history has started out as nothing more than what we are now. Students. If they can do it, why not us?”

What I've learned so far is that, a thing which I worry about is just a worry, and doesn't cause any serious or scary problems just as I suppose.    I've learned it in many situations in my life. This English course at Otago university is one example.    Before the class start, I was worried a lot about this English course, because I am personally not good at online class in which I can't get the timing of speaking. Also, I hadn't had many opportunities of talking with others in English so far after entering university, so English-speaking itself was my worry.     However, after the class started, What I considered beforehand were just worries, and don't matter seriously. Classes are enjoyable, and even if I can't understand something well, the teacher and class members teach me in many ways. My decision of joining the class turned to be a right thing to do after all.     From this lesson "things I worry about rarely happen"...

Good life rhythm is very powerful. I've learned this lesson through preparation for the entrance exam of the University of Tokyo. When I was a third-year student in high school, I often had to study at home due to the pandemic. Especially, I was not able to go to school from March to May, 2020. Thus, I had to manage a lot of time, and I knew how I would spend the time would make a difference. As was referred to in our class, I knew working for hours would not necessarily bear fruit. However, I had not known how to improve the quality of my study, so I decided to spend more time studying as the first step. In order to do so, I wanted to eliminate wasted time. But there was a limitation, so next I decided to fix my sleeping schedule. Day after day, I made it a rule to wake up a little earlier. At last, I went to bed at 0 a.m. and woke up at 5 a.m.. Five hours were shorter than my original sleeping time, but I did not feel sleepy during the day. On the contrary, I was able to focus mo...

Russia started to invade Ukraine a few days ago. Many people were killed by missiles or bombs or rifles. Ukraine President Zelensky sighned national mobilization law and Ukraine has been protecting their coutry against Russia. First I wanted to know why Russian President Putin decided to do it and why Russian people could not stop it. Secondly I was thiniking how Ukrainian fight back against the violation of their land and the use of miltary power.  Diplomatic settlements have been demanded instead of millitary power after ww2. We, especially Japan, have developed the laws or constitutions or democracy so as not to allow totalitarianism to let loose its armed force. However, I have not seriously thought how we should fight back against invasions with millitary power. I came up with an idea that we run away even though we lose our land because I don't want to lose my life neither does everyone and I don't want to attack to kill an enemy coutry's citizens. That was my answer...

What I have learned along the way is this. "Friends are treasures." When I entered the university, the pandemic started. I stayed home every day and had no fun. But then my high school friends asked me to go out for a short trip. That trip made me realize the importance of meeting friends. We talked and complained a lot about our universities. I was not the only one who felt loneliness. To have a friend who listens to your complaints is important. I have another friend from my high school, who is my best friend. I can share anything with him. We will have casual conversation and this is essential for me to keep in fit mentally. I am thankful to him for giving me lots of advice on anything.

One of the most impressive things for me among the things I’ve learned so far is this phrase in a part of “Peanut” by Charles Monroe Schulz, “They say the best way is just to live one day at a time...”.        I learned it in the mathematics class at my junior high school. In the small talk my teacher told us about some of his favorite phrases of the work, like ”You play with the cards you’re dealt. Whatever that means.” , “Well from now on, Linus, think for yourself.. Don’t take any advice from anyone!” and etc.                   I was very impressed especially with the phrase, because I think of it as a universal principle for us. It says our lives are short, therefore we should enjoy our lives day by day as much as we can, as an old poem by Horace, a poet in the Roman Empire, implies. It is so unforgettable for me.

What I have learned these days is that you should have enough courage to decline. I used to be a 'yes man'. Whatever I was asked to do, I would accept them. However, I was packed with a lot of tasks and events and felt exhausted. Then I tried to prioritize things in terms of my willingness and how much I will learn or get through the tasks or activities.   After that, I became able to focus on what I like to do and what is important for me. That makes my life satisfying. Declining is important not only for me, but also for others. If I am overwhelmed by tasks, I can't spend enough time on doing them, hence the performance that doesn't meet the expectation. I'd like to always be conscious about prioritizing things to make my life more comfortable.

Before I entered the University I lived in Hokkaido with my families.  I have 3 old brothers and a younger brother.  We sometimes fought but now we have good relation and help each other.  There was always one brother in house at least.  My mother was so busy to make our lunch box, do house work.   However, after moving to Tokyo, It was tough for me because there were little people who can talk and share dairy lives.  I took granted that I am not alone but at that time I noticed how my family are important for me. Now I am in Hokkaido and I and brothers do house work and spend together.  Now, we will not be able to spend much time together.  I hope we can make good memories and I will try to enjoy precious time with those who are around from now on.

Efforts will not betray; I have learned this through my life.      It was when I was an elementary school student that I learned this lesson for the first time. In P.E. class, we were required to be able to do a handstand. When I had difficulty practicing, my teacher said to me “efforts will not betray.” I was very impressed by his words and I practiced and practiced believing his words, finally to be able to stand on my hands! I realized how wonderful it is to overcome something difficult by keeping making efforts, which has been affecting throughout my life.      I learned the same lesson during junior high school days and senior high school days. I belonged to a junior orchestra and played the cello. The orchestra was very high level, to which many people who are going to be a professional player belonged. Therefore, it was hard for me to keep up with the orchestra and I often felt disappointed to realize difference in skills betwee...

Through this corona virus pandemic, I have learned that when facing something you can’t change no matter how you struggle, the choice you did before really matters. Although the Japanese government has lifted entry restrictions since March 2022, it had banned nearly all new foreign arrivals for more than one year and if you consider the time of the tight   border restrictions last time it lasted a total of more than two years during pandemic. As can be seen from here, the Japanese government did open its borders temporarily from October 2020 to January 2021, but it still was a very short period. And for me, making the choice to apply for the visa in advance and enter Japan in November 2020 was maybe the most correct choice I have ever made these years.   Thanks for it, I can live in Tokyo, make new friends, and do the job hunting successfully. However, almost the third of my classmates who decided to enter Japan in March 2021, one month before the university...

Picture at Potato Chip Rock, California - I joined exchange program in winter, 2020 Since I was only three years old,  my parents have expected me too much.  As they regret being lazy while they were young and wanted me to get a good education, they sent me to a private school. Even after I entered junior high school, they encouraged me to get high scores. I didn't really like studying, but high scores made me satisfied and improve my self-esteem.     By the way, I have a teacher who changed drastically my view. He is a teacher at the cram school and only ten years older than I, but I really liked his classes and his thoughts. Before I met him, I escaped from studying English and couldn't understand why I have to learn English as Japanese. However, he taught me its essence and enjoyment and showed me the world I didn't know.  I came to realize that studying is purely pleasant and exciting.       As the entrance examination...

Last month, when I went out to dinner with Professor Komamura, my advisor from college, told me, "Being able to do anything is the same as not having mastered anything”. He said, "I have taken on many different positions and tasks. Basically, I never said no. Because of this, I can do everything with ease, but I am no longer an expert in anything”.  This was a very eye-opening lesson for me. I am a curious person and have therefore dabbled in many areas. However, he taught me not to be like him, so I decided to master one field first. I found that having a specialty is similar to having one's own principles. If you have your own principles, you will be able to set standards and respond to everything.

YUE XU-ISTJ

The result of my MBTI test shows I am a ISTJ called "The Examiner". I think I am a typical ISTJ in most ways although there are some descriptions not fitting me very well.    Just like it said, I think I am a responsible and hard-working person and I like to make plans before I do something. Also, I prefer to utilize specific numbers or facts to solve problems rather than basing on intuition or uncertain knowledge.    But I don’t think I tend to obey old rules and traditions all the time. Of course, if the rules are turned out to be the best practice to get things done, I will choose to follow it and hope everyone in the organization will follow the steps stipulated in manual or something so things won’t be in chaos.    But if those rules make organizations inefficient or still have room for improvement, I would take initiatives to change the rules and optimize the process through kaizen and PDCA cycle just like the great company TOYOTA do ...

Minori Sato - INFP

My personality is INFP. I like being solitary. In my free time, I enjoy watching YouTube, reading books, walking in the neighborhood, and practicing Japanese calligraphy. However, I also like being together with others. I live in the shared house now and look forward to the events on the weekends and meeting new people. Since I am anxious about the future and at the same time I hope the future will be bright, I have a sense of intuition. I am not sure about my decision-making and try to collect as much information as possible. As a feeler, I often act before I think much about the purpose, the result I will gain after the act, and when to stop it. I can expand my potential and come to know my new interests, but eventually, I leave everything half done and don’t gain anything eventually.   I’m also a perceiving person. When I was studying for the entrance examinations, I used to make a plan according to the to-do lists, not a timetable. I am poor at estimating how long the ta...

Nanami Higashi - INFP

I seem to have INFP personality according to the test. INFP person is regarded as the Dreamer who is introspective, private, creative, and have a desire to be helpful in the world. Also, it is said that the Dreamers have talents for language and writing. In my opinion, this personality partly applies to me. Basically, I'm a person who is sometimes introverted, and sometimes extroverted. So, as it said in the explanation of the Dreamer, I have a hope to do something for people in the world or have connect with society, even though I have an introspective characteristic. On the other hand, there is an aspect that doesn't match with my personality, and that is a talent for language and writing. I sometimes have difficulties in making sentences even in Japanese, my mother tongue. Of course, I can do it without difficulties, if I just have to create sentences, but when it comes to easy-to-understand or impressive writing, I don't have splendid skills for those.

Kanon Sunayama - ISTP

According to the MBTI test, I am ISTP, "The Craftsman." the explanation of INTP is that "adventurous and independent. You like to figure out how things work and have great mechanical and technical skills. You are adaptable and spontaneous, and thrive on new and exciting situations."  To some extent, I agree with that sentence. First, I like to try new things. For example, I start playing tennis last year and that was a big challenge for me. I like putting myself in a different or new environment. I have moved three times before and always looked forward to living in a new environment. I never found it hard or lonely to leave my previous environment.  On the other hand, I don't think I have great mechanical and technical skills. I'm not good at handling machines. I'm the one who breaks it, not fixes it or assembles it, I think.   mechanical and technical skills.

Erina Kon - INFP

According to the test, my personality is classified as The Dreamer. The Dreamer has roughly three aspects.      First, those who are The Dreamer type are “introspective,” or reflect on themselves deeply. This aspect does not really seem true of me, in that I am not sure I can face myself objectively, rather, I think I sometimes tend to hesitate admitting my mistakes.      Second, The Dreamer type people are “highly idealistic.” About this aspect, I think I have one. Actually, my goal of the future is contributing to protecting the environment but I have difficulty taking a step for realizing the goal; I am thinking of majoring in something related to the environment, such as city planning and functions of forests, but I haven’t decided yet. Like this, I think I have a big goal although I have not taken enough actions, which means idealistic.      Third, The Dreamers “have a talent for language and writing.” I am afra...

Taisei Hamaguchi - ESFP

The MBTI says that I am an entertainer. I don't know this is correct, but I do have the experience of making a skit in my high school festival. The audience laughed a lot more than I had expected and I was very happy about that. This might show that I could be an entertainer, if not inherently an entertaining person.

Shogo Moro - ISTP

According to the MBTI test, I am ISTP, "The Craftsman." Namely, I am supposed to be interested in analyzing structures of things and make use of my creativity actively and spontaneously. It is true that I am spontaneous to some extent. I have a (little) desire to improve myself and I am prone to react to opportunities and ways that help me to develop my ability. On the other hand, unfortunately, I also have a tendency to easily get bored and give up putting my plans into practice. Nonetheless, I was able to realize some of them, so I think I am successful in improving myself on the whole. I like analyzing things rather than creating things. I feel it difficult to come up with new ideas whenever I am asked to do so. When analyzing things, I just have to think about them again and again from different perspectives. If I know what to do, I have a good ability to concentrate one matter for a long time. Analysis matches my personality very well.

Hiroyuki Utsumi-INFP

According to the MBTI test, I seem to be called INFP. To some extent I agree to this result. The textbook says INFP tend to be private and introspective. I would rather to value my private time and life. It is my habit when I want to get relaxed, to calmly read some of my favorite books in a rocking chair. And I often get lost in thought for myself. Moreover the reading says INFP tends to have a talent of language and writings. I don’t know whether I have a talent of language, but I actually like to learn various new languages, especially their grammar. So, the last year, I took the comparative linguistics class at the university and studied “King Lear” in medieval Welsh a bit. Therefore, I think the indicated personality matches me to some degree.

Jiayue Chen - INTP

I am INTP," the engineer". According to the MBTI profile, the explanation of INTP is “logical, individualistic, reserved and very curious individuals. You focus on ideas, theories and the explanation of how things work.”   I agree that I am logical, reserved and individualistic. When I attend in a group project in school, the first thing I do is not waiting for the tasks assigned by the group leader, but organize the logic stealthily. So I am really in to brain storming rather than finish each task assigned by the leader without self-thinking. Also I think this way will benefits me and makes me learn more from the project.  However when it comes to work, I have no idea whether I will change in the future.    I did this MBTI test before because it was very popular on the internet, but the explanation of the result was much longer than the explanation in the textbook, I haven’t even finished reading it by that time. So I want to remind everyone who are curi...

Kenta Nishida -ISTP

According to the description in the textbook, I am “independent and adventurous”. I think this makes sense because I prefer working independently, not in a group, and I love finding something new. I find it enjoyable to take a trip  alone, or at most with my close friends,  and stay at the city I have never been to.       In addition, it says that I “have great mechanical and technical skills.” However, I cannot help but disagree with this, because I extremely hate using machines or techniques and I do not have any skills mechanically and technically.  Hopefully, I'd like to be more used to machine mechanism and so on.      It also suggests that I am “adaptable and spontaneous, and thrive on new and exciting situations.” I think this is actually the case, since I have a tendency to try to change myself continuously and enjoy adapting to new environment.     Based on what I have mentioned above, I believe MBTI de...

Kana Shimamoto-ISTJ

According to the MBTI test results, I am "The Examiner". It is said that the Examiner is "someone who is responsible, loyal and hard working" and "someone who have an acute sense of right and wrong and work hard at preserving established norms and traditions". I think this is partially consistent with my personality. My strong sense of justice and following rules seriously are consistent with this detail. Because of this personality, I have often held leadership positions since I was a child. On the other hand, I am not necessarily a strict adherent to all traditions and disciplines. Traditions are important, but they can become a mere name, and some customs are not essential. When I was a senior in college, we had a tradition of conducting club meetings in person. However, college classrooms were not always available, and some students were too far away or otherwise unable to attend. Therefore, I discontinued this tradition and introduced meetings via zo...

Shokei Takayama-INTP

INTP ‘ The Engineer ’ is the indicated character of me by the Myers-Briggs Test Indicator. To me, especially today, engineers are thought to sit on facing PCs all the day and just code. In fact, they aren’t, according to Briggs. They only have to be logical, individualistic, reserved, and curious and to be able to explain how things work theoretically. I was happy to hear that because I understand at the moment I don’t need to go buying textbooks about JAVA or C and Python and stay up all the night to procure at least the right to be called engineer so as not to say ‘it was definitely wrong because I don’t even know how to code’ before the next class starts tomorrow. So, I should say I’m a completely ‘The engineer’ type of person. It hundred percent fits me. I am coherent, not group-oriented, restrained, inquisitive, therefore I wouldn’t say the Test Indicator gets something wrong. It fits me, though I am not sure that this indication comes to explain my personality because I surely ha...

Natsumi Fujita-ESFP

I'm ESFP, 'The Entertainer'. As the explanation says, I'm cooperative. Because I belonged to the cheerleading team and brass band club, both of which require us to cooperate with each other, I love to work with others. Added to that I always enjoy excitement and love new adventures. Last year, I started 2 new jobs and 3 new hobbies; weight training, dancing and flower arrangement. I always find something new and exciting. Although I like to be the centre of attention and hate being alone, that's not always true. Sometimes I'd like to be alone and enjoy myself doing whatever I want. I'm really considerate and concerned about what others think too much. That way, I tend to adjust to others and give up my desire. That's why I sometimes need to be alone regardless of my personality.

I’m a New Zealander. I was born in Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand and grew up there with my older sister and younger brother. After graduating with a degree in English literature, I moved further south to the university city of Dunedin. After working on campus in Dunedin and doing further study in education, I got married and moved to the Kansai region of Japan where I lived for 15 years. That is where my children grew up. In 2005, I moved back to Dunedin and I have lived here ever since. Design is my passion. I enjoy reveling in the beauty I see in the world around me whether it be in a flower, the trees, mountains and streams or whether it be in a poem, a novel, a sketch, a song, a painting, an interior, a garden or a building. For me a ceramic pot, a stone garden or a room that brings me to tears is a reflection of divine order and the mind of God. In my free time, I like to wander in the hills surrounding Dunedin, taking in the vistas. I also enjoy listening to...

I was born in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and then move to Shanghai since 3 years old. My grand mother was born in Shanghai and she is one of the people who responded to the call of the country dedicating herself to the construction of Xinjiang when she was 18 years old. The decision she made and the policy, sent-down youth, indeed has influenced my family a lot. This is also the reason why I am interested in public policy, I want to know more about the mechanism behind these policies and figure out how to evaluate a policy as an efficient policy. Recently, I am quite interested in development economics, but since I am too lazy, I decided to start learning it from next semester.     My hobby is playing video games, listening to music ,traveling and eating delicious food. My favorite food is hotpot and octopus dumplings(takoyaki). I have ate octopus dumplings once before in Shanghai and the taste is totally different from that in Japan. So I was pretty surpris...

I’m a Japanese from Tokyo. I am a freshman, 19 years old. My first year in the university was (a little unfortunately to me) full of study: the hardest class was one that required us to learn how to write a paper in English. I also have been doing a part time job at my high school. There, I help students decide how they study or which university they go on to.      Now I’m in vacation and enjoying my hobbies. One big hobby is watching movies, sometimes in the theater and sometimes at home. My favorite movies are “Sound of Music,” “La vérité,” “Titanic” and many others. The other day, I went and watched “West Side Story.” This is a remake of the movie “West Side Story” in 1961. Comparing with the older one, the new one seemed to put focus on certain characters, giving theoretical backgrounds to them.       About my future, I haven’t decided yet what to major in.
