I’m a Japanese from Tokyo. I am a freshman, 19 years old. My first year in the university was (a little unfortunately to me) full of study: the hardest class was one that required us to learn how to write a paper in English. I also have been doing a part time job at my high school. There, I help students decide how they study or which university they go on to.

Now I’m in vacation and enjoying my hobbies. One big hobby is watching movies, sometimes in the theater and sometimes at home. My favorite movies are “Sound of Music,” “La vérité,” “Titanic” and many others. The other day, I went and watched “West Side Story.” This is a remake of the movie “West Side Story” in 1961. Comparing with the older one, the new one seemed to put focus on certain characters, giving theoretical backgrounds to them.

About my future, I haven’t decided yet what to major in. I’m interested in the relationship between nature and humans; to be more specific, I am interested in city planning in harmony with nature, or I’m curious about making use of the function of the forests, which would make people relieved.

  1. Doing a part-time job at your high school? That sounds fun.
I know! My freshmen year was full of study. I wrote a lot of papers both Japanese and English. Sometimes, it was fun, though. I love the movie "Sound of Music". I watched it in junior high.

  2. Titanic is very moving. I watched it many times and cried because I was so moved. Have you ever seen Les Misérables? I recommend Les Misérables because of its beautiful music and singing.

  3. I am also a freshman and I think this year was really hard, too.
As for your major, I am also interested in them. However, as I took lectures by professors of urban engineering, I came to realize that city planning is not a suitable field for me in terms of my ability though I still like it...

  4. To write a paper in English in first grade?! That sounds very difficult..
And I want to know the picture. Is that a event held by U-tokyo? So are you doing something to protect the trees or something like that :)?

  5. City planning would be a fascinating field to be involved in. Urban areas which feature woods and streams, parks and meadows, basketball courts and gardens - you could foster such as these. I totally agree with you - forests can 'make people relieved', they can relieve their stress.

  6. I understand about the function and the relieving effect of forests, nature or just a piece of wood. I like wooden products better. City planning in harmony with nature is quite fascinating though it seems to be not too easy unless you think planting trees aroud buildings as the harmony with nature. But it's quite impoprtant for modern people who are often stressful. I think forests or wood has many things to do with wellbeing.
