Everybody in the world should have access to a library (Nanami Higashi, Jiayue CHEN)

We cannot say people around the world have access to a library nowadays. Is it necessary for everyone in the world to get access to it?

Some developing countries may not need a library, because they’d like to spend money on something more essential for their lives, such as food, housing, and infrastructure. So, access to a library can be a low priority in underdeveloped countries. Additionally, there are people who cannot read in the world. According to research, the global adult illiteracy rate (aged 15 years and older) was 14 percent in 2019, which has remained almost unchanged since 2015. If we create a library and get access to books, it’ll be useless if we don’t have literacy. As a result, constructing a library can cause the waste of resources. However, we can also find some merits for countries and people I mentioned above, and merits for us as well.

Regardless of countries, age, or abilities, people have rights to have access to knowledge as they like. Therefore, if it’s not one’s highest priority, still the freedom of gaining knowledge has to be preserved. Furthermore, access to a library can have a good effect on people in developing countries. The more knowledge people gain, the more democratic society they can build. When you get some new knowledge from books, you can be skeptical about your situation, and you will get your own opinion about a society. This change in people leads society to change.

There is no doubt that even though the standard of living is improving, many people are still illiterate in the world. However, the library also plays a significant role in their life. In addition to the literature , there are many picture books which contribute directly for people learning languages and characters offered by libraries. What is more, the language, knowledge and information which can be used directly in people’s life not only benefit their work and study, but also put them in a favorable position in the way of thinking of themselves. By learning knowledge from a variety of ground, people tend to treat things objectively and erase their stereotype.

It is indisputable that the possibility of having access to a library shares multiple advantages with people. Thus, in my opinion, the government should increase their funding to support and construct the facilities in the library. Likewise, proper measures should be made by the government to let people notice the role libraries are playing. Thus it is essential for the government to  organize more educational and attractive activities, in order to increase the use-rate and to make sure everyone can get improvement from that.

I agree with your recommendation that the government have to assist in both building libraries and in enabling citizens to make use of them.

  5. I have understood how beneficial libraries are especially in our modern life. You are saying it's human right to have access to knowledge but do you think it's fundermental enough to be preserved as much as freedom or equlity even in developiing countries or war-zones around the world. You think we should construct a library in developing countries for its development or in conflict areas for peaceful settlements?

  6. Your argument is convincing! Libraries give us not only knowledge, but also a lot of fun apart from the severe reality. From this view, I'm sure libraries is among the highest priorities except for supplies for a living.
