Kana Shimamoto
I’m from a town called Kobe, located in the middle of Japan. Kobe is a wonderful environment where nature and the city coexist. When I was a child, I used to go to the beach in the summer and the mountains in the winter. I have studied abroad twice, once in France when I was 15 years old and again in Switzerland when I was 20 years old. I spent my time in France surrounded by vast fields, and in Switzerland I saw beautiful lakes and the Alps.
The influence of living in this environment has shaped who I am today. Even now, I prefer to enjoy walks in nature rather than spend time in the neon lights of the city. After walking, I like to go to hot springs. Recently, I have become addicted to saunas where I lie on heated ores, called bedrock baths, to warm my body.
Aside from these hobbies, my research
interest is in criminal policy. I am interested in how people who have
committed crimes are subsequently reintegrated into society, and who and how
they are supported. I am currently finishing my second year of my master's
degree and plan to continue my volunteer work and research.
Actually I‘ve been to Kobe when I studied at DOSHISHA UNIVERSITY in kyoto as an exchange student. It's a really beatiful place and we took Photos at BE KOBE monument. I really want to go to kobe again.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're interested in Kobe! Kobe is my favorite city too. Please come to Kobe again :)
DeleteI'm interested in your research! Is your volunteer work related to people who are trying to come back into the society? What do you do in detail?
ReplyDeleteMy volunteer work is to support juveniles who have been released from juvenile detention centers and children who do not have an adequate home environment! Thank you for your comment :)
DeleteI am surprised to hear that you are from Kobe, because my little sister currently lives in Kobe and I am a little bit familiar with the city. I think Kobe is such a wonderful place that there are a lot of tourists spots to visit.
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned that one of your hobbies is sauna. Some of my friends also love saunas, and hopefully I'd like to try it in the future!
Actually, I love watching series of American criminal dramas( like FBI investigation), so your major seems very interesting to me. I wish your efforts bear fruit!
Glad you are related to Kobe. Please come visit us in Kobe :)!
DeleteSauna is very good. There is a method called "Loyly," where you pour aroma oil on hot stones and look up at the steam with a towel, and it feels great because you sweat a lot. Thanks for wishing me luck on my research too!
I'd like to know more about the experiences in France and Switwerland!
ReplyDeleteIn France, I lived in a small town in the North called Doullens and went a high school called Lycee Montalembert. I was the only Asian in that town, so I stood out a lot. haha
DeleteIn Switzerland, I lived in Geneva, the city where the UN headquarters is located, and I was in the faculty of law at the University of Geneva!
They're both beautiful places, you should definitely pay them a visit!
So interesting to read that you are from Kobe. I have been for some walks in the Mount Rokko region, just as no doubt you have.
ReplyDeleteWalking in the mountains is a very special thing to do, isn't it? There is a ruggedness and mass about the mountains that moves us to awe. In the mountains we can experience the sublime.
I hope you can come to New Zealand one day and experience walking in the mountains here too.
David :-)

DeleteYou have climbed Mt. Rokko! There are more than ten mountains in a row there, and "Horseback" is especially thrilling and challenging to climb. I would love to climb mountains in New Zealand someday.
DeleteHi Kana, I hope you can realize this dream in the future. :-)
DeleteSwitzerland and France. It was lovely. I prefer walking in nature too. I'm a bit curious about the law system, so your research about criminal policy sounds very interesting.
ReplyDeleteHave you traveled to Europe too? Europe has a lot of old towns and I loved drinking coffee on the terrace of a café.
DeleteCriminal policy is a very interesting field. Of course, the judiciary is important in making sentences for those who have committed crimes, but what is really important, in my opinion, is the process that how he or she returns to society.
Your research theme is quite interesting. I've been taught about the similar topic, the reintegration of those who have finished their sentence, especially children, in the criminal law class. So I would like to know more about your research.
ReplyDeleteJuvenile crimes are interesting because they are treated differently than adult crimes. If you are interested in my research, you can read my paper by searching my full name and the University of Tokyo. Check it out if you are interested;)
DeleteI've always wanted to go to kobe! I heard there is very beautiful and arty. Also i am really interested in your experiences studying abroad. If there is any chance in the future, i will love to hear your sharing!
ReplyDeleteKobe is a beautiful port city surrounded by mountains and the sea, and has an exotic atmosphere with Chinatown and the Old Foreign Settlement. Please visit!
DeleteStudying abroad is also highly recommended, as you will not only learn a language, but also a lot about culture and other things.
You have studied abroad. You like sauna, nature, mountains. You are interested in crimes and policy. You have desire to help with people in trouble and have a keen sense of justice. You are sometimes pessimistic. How energetic and talented you are. I am convinced that the driving force and motivation spring from the city. You can go further, anywhere with Kobe behind you.
