Nanami Higashi

I was born in Tochigi prefecture, JAPAN, and have lived in Saitama since I was a 2-years-old baby. I’m going to major in Pharmacy from this Spring. At the moment, I’m interested in how medicine can be related to the society and people. I’m also curious about the mechanism of diseases, effects of medicine, and how to use medicine properly. I don’t have any clear idea about my future now, but at least I’m eager to be connected to the medical field in some ways even after graduation.

I am a member of flamenco troupe of the university. Flamenco is a Spanish traditional performance in which we enjoy the combination of dancing, singing, sounds of guitar, and even hand clap called palma. I started it about one year ago since a friend of mine took me to the club. The moment I put on shoes specially used for flamenco and made sounds by tapping floor, I had really pleasant feelings, and since then I’ve got into flamenco:) We practice twice a week, and one of the practice day we take lessons from teachers. So, every beginner can learn flamenco from scratch in an authentic way. If you have some interests in flamenco, I’ll willingly tell you about much more information of our club:)

  1. I met a flamenco dancer for the first time! I have only seen them on TV. I have studied Nihon buyo (traditional Japanese dance), but it seems that it is quite different from flamenco in terms of foot movements, etc. In nihon buyo, you have to keep your knees bent, with both knees together.

    1. I agree that there are many aspects of flamenco that are different from nihon buyo, but they seem to have similarities as well. We also have to bend knees a little bit!

  2. I have lived in Kanagawa, which is very close to Saitama, for about seven years, but I don't have much experience of going sightseeing there. Do you have any recommended places to visit in Saitama?

    1. I love Kanagawa which has Kamakura, Yokohama and more attractive places!!! Actually, I have been to Kamakura recently!
As for sightseeing places here, I recommend that you visit Kawagoe which has historical and beautiful landscapes. You can find some foods of sweet potato since Kawagoe is famous for its sweet potato. There is even udon made from sweet potato:)

  5. Sounds like flamenco has been a particularly positive part of your life over the last year. It seems to be a dance filled with, on the one hand, discipline and control and, on the other hand, passion and drama. I would love to see it performed some day.
The very best for your studies in pharmacy, by the way. Perhaps you could come and do some post graduate study here at Otago University in the future as we have an internationally respected pharmacy school here.

  6. I know it's not your intention to make a sentence look larger, but I feel your passion for medical field and determination to contribute to the field from the little bit bigger sentence. I was so happy to read your lively descriptions about your experiience of flamenco. Also, I like the way you express your interest and passion clearly.
