Should individual countries have the right to interfere with the affairs of another country?-Shogo Moro, Erina Kon

The principle of non-intervention in the domestic affairs of another nation is enacted by the Charter of the United Nations, and globally accepted. However, should individual countries truly have no right to interfere with the affairs of another country?

It is widely believed that every country should have the right to decide their policies independently. Interference often leads to one-sided demands and unreasonable dominance, which contradict the benefit of a country which receives them. The history of colonization obviously reveals the existence of conflicts and exploitation as a result of outside intervention. Additionally, Russian invasion of Ukraine indicates that interference in the affairs of another country results in a terrible situation even today. On the other hand, although interference in domestic affairs induces many problems like this, the principle of non-intervention sometimes causes even worse influences.

Suppose there is an evil authority oppressing citizens and ignoring international laws, and it is impossible to improve the situation just by citizens of the country. Then, other countries should have the right to stop the brutality. In fact, Nazis is an example of an extremely evil government which could not be beaten domestically and international interference was necessary.

Although interference with one country against its will has been historically repeated, now the morals of opposing war and systems that stop excessive or unreasonable interference have been established by the international society, which makes it harder and harder to do excessive or unreasonable interference ignoring protests from the international society. In fact, Russia is being accused of invading Ukraine unreasonably and has been imposed sanctions, although cooperation of international society has not been able to completely stop Russia’s actions.

As stated above, there are situations where it is necessary for other countries to interfere with one country, although it is true that interfering with one country ignoring its will has historically repeated and should not be repeated any more. In other words, interference should be allowed under certain conditions. First, interference should be allowed as long as international society agrees with the validity of the interference. Not only about whether to start interfering, but also about monitoring to prevent the interference from becoming excessive, it is necessary for international society to unite. Besides, it is essential to make sure that citizens in a country which is going to be interfered with would agree with or understand the interference.

  1. I agree that interference should be approved by international society like the U.N. before it gets into action. However can we interfere with Russia other than economic sanctions inspite that it is one of the permanent members of the U.N. security coucil and it has nuclear weapons. I don't think we can't even though the interference is demanded and approved by international society. Also, the limited permission to interfere can easily abused. so I think any types of intereference should be strictly prohibited if we don't want to have the kind of invasion as a mutation of inteference.

  2. I agree with the idea that we should interfere with another country if the problems are only solved by the support of other countries. Now, there is no clear rule or criteria when and how to interfere with the affairs of another country. However, some countries such as Myanmar and Russia get out of line too much. Therefore, we have to discuss the rule about interference as soon as possible.

  3. Of course, it is best to decide everything about their country by themselves. However it sometimes does not work and need interfere of someone. There is no organization to restrict sovereignty in international society. UN was supposed to act this role but it could not. I think we should make UN more fare and public place not speaking only their interests loudly.

  4. I also agree that individual countries have the right to interfere with the affairs of another country, but as you may know that depends on the situations. Even if the conditions in North Korea have got worse and worse and civilians do need support from others, once we interfere with it, no one could tell what will happen...
