Something I have learned along the way - Kanon Sunayama

JUST TRY. Don’t be afraid. Everyone is just a beginner at first.

This is what I have learned along the way.

In the past, sometimes I felt that I’m not the suitable person to be here or to take this class because everyone around me is better than me.

Especially after I entered university, many people around me are good at something: people who can do programming and are good at dealing with machines, people who speak very logical and clean English, people who have plenty of knowledge in biology and are good at experiments, and so on.

But I changed my mind and think that I have my own strengths, and everyone is different. Also, everyone makes mistakes at first. They must have worked hard and made progress, so why not me? I can do it too.

There is one movie quote from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

“Think of it this way: Every great wizard in history has started out as nothing more than what we are now. Students. If they can do it, why not us?”

  1. Thanks for sharing your good story. When I was a freshman at the University of Tokyo, I used to envy everyone around me because they all had something they excelled at. I know how you feel. I still compare myself with others sometimes, but as you said, it's important not to be afraid!

P.S. What a beautiful landscape! Is it "Shirakawa-go"?

  2. It's so impressing that everyone is just a beginner at first. People try to hide what they were like at the beginning. If we have generous mind to share our stories of the beginning, everyone is encouraged to start new things that seem impossible for them.

  3. The phrase is very impressive for me. I think it is great to believe in yourself. I often had the same feelings also, and tended to be anxious about making mistakes, but it is true that without trying, nothing can start.
