Something I Have Learned Along the Way - Hiroyuki Utsumi

One of the most impressive things for me among the things I’ve learned so far is this phrase in a part of “Peanut” by Charles Monroe Schulz, “They say the best way is just to live one day at a time...”.

I learned it in the mathematics class at my junior high school. In the small talk my teacher told us about some of his favorite phrases of the work, like ”You play with the cards you’re dealt. Whatever that means.” , “Well from now on, Linus, think for yourself.. Don’t take any advice from anyone!” and etc.

I was very impressed especially with the phrase, because I think of it as a universal principle for us. It says our lives are short, therefore we should enjoy our lives day by day as much as we can, as an old poem by Horace, a poet in the Roman Empire, implies. It is so unforgettable for me.

  1. I think "live one day at a time" is a wonderful expression! I realized anything can happen when COVID-19 pandemic began and since then, I have been trying to enjoy as much as possible what I can do now.

  2. ”They say the best way is just to live one day at a time.” is the most basic lesson, yet often forgotten by people. We all have to make the day a good one, because today is the youngest day of our lives! Thank you for the sharing!

  3. Finding joy in 'the everyday' or 'the mundane' is indeed important. It is important to enjoy the beauty around us and to appreciate the kindness of those we cross paths with daily. We shouldn't be so future or goal focused that we don't treasure the now. :-)

  4. You cannot repeat the same day even though you deeply regret it. That's why we need to live one day as much as we could and that would make our life precious. Thank you for sharing!!
