  The number of women who have top jobs is still low even though many women got  jobs. It is said that women should be promoted to top jobs.  In fact in the C-suite in the US, women comprised 21 percent in January 2020. In the EU’s largest publicly listed companies in 2020, 19.3 percent of executives and 7.9 percent of CEOs were women, according to Catalyst, a non-profit group.So Do society have to promote women to top jobs?  Who is responsible for it?


There are some disagreements. Firstly, If a man and a woman have the same ability and have put the same effort into the work, it is unequal for the man to get promoted after the woman. And it will cause reverse discrimination. Additionally,  It will generate the stigma that women could be thought they have top jobs just because of gender. What’s more, for the company, If a woman is promoted just because of she is a woman, it will lower the motivation of men in organizations.However, given that there are so many workplace unfairness that women face and its negative influence caused by it, we need the positive discrimination and have some affirmative actions to some degree work-wise.

 

There are still so many disadvantages and gender biases of women now in the world, and  it’s true we should actively improve the gender equality in order to reduce the sexial discrimination through the affirmative action. 


Moreover, there is also an economical reason for promoting women. In today’s Japan the working-age  population is steeply decreasing because of the low birthrate and aging society. Therefore it will be more necessary to make more women join the labor market, like some Nordic social-democratic countries, so as to maintain the productivity of the country.


For this reason, it is needed to promote women to top jobs.

First of all. Not trying to equality on the simple number.  Just trying to make the same figure between men and women would make stigma and division. To avoid the stigma,  we should try to care for the disadvantages of women on behalf of finding value by gender. Additionally, we should also introduce a more effective nursery system, so that women can work without spending too much time bringing up their children. For example, in France, there are many private kindergartens allowed by the government, and, in Sweden, there is a law forcing companies to give the workers vacation, who have a new child.

  1. I agree with your statement that just trying to realize equality on the number is not enough. I think it is important to build a society where people can get promoted to the top if they want to and they have enough capacity, regardless of their gender.

  2. Women should be promoted because sexual discrimination must be vanished and women can contribute to the productivity. And you are saying nursely system shoud be more developed for women to work better. That is usefull but not admireble in terms of gender equality, you know. So we have to change the nursely system or traditions where women take care of children after they gave birth.

  3. I agree with your statement that we need to promote women on top jobs. I think it is essential to set up a nursery system and to gain the understanding of spouses.
    We learned about the Prime Minister of New Zealand in Sonya's class and I found her to be a very good example. Japan is still lagging behind other countries in the advancement of women in society, so I hope that many more women like Jacinda will emerge in the future.

  4. If we take affirmative actions, some might consider this as reverse discrimination. However, considering the current situation, we have to encourage companies to get women promoted and see how much a diverse working environment will benefit them and how it will work.
    After promoting them to do this, I hope that the society where people get promoted regardless their gender will be created.
